linked up: Adoptions, Bulimia, and Chatroulette

Today is a brief linked up post featuring some powerful pieces that I recommend reading:

1. Thea Lim over at Racialiscious wrote an excellent post on the adoption disruption occurring in Russia after Torry Hansen, a US woman adopted a son from Russia sent the child back on a plane by himself claiming that he was violent. Lim does a great job of exploring how some parents have – and some agencies foster – idealistic views of how the adoption process works and how these views are connected to racist and xenophobic ideas regarding how an adopted child should behave once they are united with their adoptive families.

2. Rachel Simmons has a new blog post up where she discusses Omegle and Chatroulette, two sites that allow strangers to chat (video chat in the case with Chatroulette) with one another. Both sites are popular amongst teen girls and many parents are clueless as to what happens on Omegle or Chatroulette. Simmons tries out both sites for herself – with particularly scary results on Chatroulette involving masturbating men – and assesses the concerns parents and teens should have when using these new media tools.

3. The NYT has a powerful story about one mother’s decision to make a documentary about her daughter’s battle with bulimia.  Melissa, Judy Avrin’s daughter, died due to heart complications associated with the eating disorder. As a way to cope with her grief, Ms. Avrin made, and is currently in the process of editing, the documentary Someday Melissa. By completing and screening her film, Ms. Avrin hopes to raise awareness about bulimia and become an advocate for families who have a child with an eating disorder.
