girls in the news: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to give a speech on girls’ education and health

Hilary Clinton is set to address the ICPD today (image courtesy of sunsentinel.com)

It’s been a while since I posted an entry, mostly because I was in the process of revising entries (on Drew Barrymore, Jodie Foster, and female child stars) for an Encyclopedia on Women and Popular Culture. But I want to take a quick minute to note that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be delivering a speech today at the 15th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), commenting the US’s renewed support and dedication to reaching the goals set by the ICPD, including the Millennium Development Goals.

The Millennium Development Goals consist of eight “international development goals that 192 United Nations member states and at least 23 international organizations have agreed to achieve by the year 2015.” (thank you wikipedia.) These goals include promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls, achieving universal primary education, and promoting reproductive rights. Since many of the goals focus on gender, equal access, and the future of girls in impoverished nations I thought some of you might be interested in Clinton’s speech. She’s scheduled to give her talk at 2:30pm EST and you can watch the speech at the ICPD’s website or watch it on CSPAN.
